The intricate nature of the human body with its different but unified systems is one that has never and will never be replicated. I have chosen to study medicine because of my passion for science. I am always willing to face daring challenges, especially when there is a reward attached to it. I am aware that studying medicine is daunting, but on the other hand, there is a sense of gratification when you see the fruits of your labour. The doctors that I have had a personal encounter with during my work experience have helped me to have an insight into the gratifying nature of medicine career. In order to deepen my understanding of the medical career I organized for a placement week with a team of General Practitioners. Through this encounter I acquired a lot of insight into the complex interactions between doctors and patients. I learnt that healing begins with acceptance and connection between the doctor and the patient for it develops trust. I observed the ward rounds and I actually learnt a different perspective of being a doctor that I previously did not really think about. I observed the deaths that happen while the patient is undergoing treatment, the hours that the doctors are on their feet working and the lack of adequate time to even take a proper meal. Although this experience was heart rending, I gained more confidence and improved on my communication skills through the encounter I had with patients and doctors. The doctors were willing and ready to answer my questions when asked I them how they went about certain situations like the ones I had observed. Through their advice, I developed confidence and sharpened my communication skills. All these experiences have made me more decided to pursue my desire for being a doctor because I at least have a one on one encounter into the nature of interactions between doctors and patients and have an insight into the heart rending experiences that doctors undergo. I also achieved a first aid certificate through my participation and training in the St John International where I gained skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. I also learnt more on team building skills through the cooperation with other team members when offering first aid to patients. These skills are as well important to the medical career. My passion for science and a medical carrier can also be traced to the selections at my A-Level, in which it is important to possess skills in time and stress management and self-motivation in studies. My analytical skills have further been developed through my choice of biology and chemistry because they have instilled in me the ability to critique experiments and develop experimental reasoning. I am cognizant of the demands of a medical career but my love and devotion to become a medical doctor has further been fuelled by the exposure I have had while working as a volunteer.
